Sneak Preview: AfroDite Exposed: Sexual Empowerment in an Adult Hip Hop Film
Panel discussion with filmmakers: 7 pm, Wolfe Conference room (2nd fl)
Screening: 8pm, Swayduck Auditorium (ground fl)

The New School for Social Research, in conjunction with Terry Williams as part of his Sex in the City series, invites you to a preview screening.

Collaborating Entities include The Goddess Factory, Bless Da Mic, Casa Attabex Ache with the support of Chashama and The New School for Social Research

The Goddess Factory uses movies and motivation to empower women emotionally, politically and sexually. Each of these tenets is equally important to empowerment. It’s a holistic approach. You can’t feel completely empowered politically if you are not empowered sexually. You can’t own yourself sexually or emotionally, if you don’t own your political self.

Corporations are trying to own & market our sexuality. It’s being bought, sold and traded on the open market. It is vital not only to criticize but to offer an alternative voice to those seeking this kind of content. Clearly this is challenging with so many negative and exploitive images dominating popular culture.

We work with V-Day to stop violence against women and girls. A central part of this initiative is being clear that sex is not wrong or bad. The results of irresponsible sexuality and representations include teen pregnancy and growing rates of HIV. However, we need to be clear that there is still a healthy place for erotic joy in communities that that have been viewed consistently as over-sexualized.

The sexual representations are damaging, not sex. People have a vested interested in owning and controlling our sexuality and we will no longer allow them to do so.

"If I didn't define myself for myself, I would be crunched into other people's fantasies for me and eaten alive" ~ Audre Lorde

ADMISSION $10.00 / PARKING $4.00

"Sistas…" began over thirteen years ago as a call to the entertainment industry to acknowledge that there is grand talent amongst African American women filmmakers. What began as a simple screening and discussion became one of the most recognized inspirational and emulated events of the Black filmmaking community. It is a clear-cut concept; a screening of short films written and/or directed by some of the nation's top filmmakers with a dialog following.

Past "Sista filmmakers" have included early works of Gina Prince - Bythewood (Love & Basketball), Kasi Lemmons (Eve's Bayou), Yvette Freeman (ER), and Dianne Houston (first Black Female to be nominated for an Academy Award / Short Film category) just to name a very few. Special invited guests will get a rare chance to have an open dialogue and hear the awe inspiring stories of how these Sistas did it for themselves…

The Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center was formed in 1996 as a non-profit organization designed to advocate, educate, research, develop and preserve the history, as well as the future of Blacks in film and television.

Leslie, Producer of TABOO stars at NBT; APRIL 14-17

Leslie Lewis Sword, the Executive Producer of Taboo, stars as Dorothy Dandridge at the famous National Black Theatre in Harlem in a one-woman show YESTERDAY CAME TOO SOON - APRIL 14-17. Her show will begin with a 4 show run, and from there, who knows!

Synopsis:
Dorothy Dandridge, the bombshell who grabbed the Hollywood brass ring in the 1950s with the title role in Fox's all-black mega-musical Carmen Jones, is stirringly brought to life by Leslie Lewis Sword, in this one-woman tour-de-force. Dandridge's journey follows the familiar road of struggle, failed marriages, exploitation, fame, bad judgment, promiscuity, booze, pills and an untimely end. Adding new dimensions to this classic plight however, is the matter of Dandridge's race and the birth of a mentally retarded daughter, which emerges as the most painful component of a life filled with disappointments, among them a disastrous liaison with Carmen Jones director Otto Preminger. YESTERDAY CAME TOO SOON is set backstage at the faded Dandridge's final engagement, a minor 1965 Las Vegas gig, the day before she was found dead at age 42 from an overdose of the antidepressant Tofranil.

"Movies & Gumbo” Using Film to Discuss the Undiscussable
Workshop leaders Todd Bartel and Abiola Abrams

Abiola Abrams attends this year's Diversity Day to initiate a film project on our campus, with our own student body. The workshop will provide an in-depth opportunity to discuss her films and any relevant questions they raise. The discussion will ultimately move into a creative brainstorm session about how CSW could create a film of our own that explores the subject/s of "diversity/equality/race" etc and map out an initial proposal and plan to be carried out in the fall of the coming school year.
